Layout Visit: Ho Scale Michigan Southern Op Session
Hey guys, for this week's video, I thought I would post a video of a layout ops session I recently attended. The layout was built by Norm Logan and is set in the 1970's in Michigan. The Michigan Southern layout is freelanced, however, some real cities are modeled such as Plymouth and Livonia. Hi Nick, Your Layout is looking real good I wish I could have seen a little more detail about your project. In the meantime I had to resort to find other videos for help and if I wasn't able to find the best possible answers to the subject they were talking about. I moved on with my Layout too pray that things will be better. Anyway my question is about the roadbed. Is there a easier way to go from the mainline to the yard using the roadbed? Thank you for your time Sincerely Allan

Hi Nick, Thank you for explaining this subject. I have a follow-up question about the track and roadbed situation. When the train leaves the yard and goes to the branch line is there a transition from a mainline track to a branch line track?

To be honest, my decision to use a cork roadbed or not would depend on the material the track will sit on - if foam, I would not use cork; if plywood/OSB, I would use cork.

He is making this over-complicated. You don't have to mark both sides of the cross members, just mark the centers and match up the marks. Takes less time to do. Even carpenters will not mark both sides of joists or cross members, they will either mark the centers or one side and place an x or another mark to show where the joists or cross member is placed.

  • @Browneye57

Simple and effective...like it. Some of them WAY over-complicate this. Since mine is 6x7, I'm using two modules of 3x7 on an el-girder base much like you have here, so it can be easily disassembled and transported when necessary. With locking casters on the legs, it will be super easy to move around or lock in place.

Just found your channel and have watched the episodes of building a table to laying track doing ballast etc. Very interesting videos and I like how you're using the throw switches bcuz I'm considering getting those for my 1st h.o.scale layout too. Thanks for sharing your videos and I'm viewing them from Delmar, Delaware.

I am looking at using some sheets of 3/4 inch plywood I already have, but I guess for the side pieces and the cross pieces I am going to cut from one sheet I would still drill pilot holes, correct?

Had to sell the plywood. Seems some folks thought I didn't have the room to build the railroad I envisioned.

Thanks. That was insightful. It added another dimension to the art and skill of model railroading, ie in addition to personal preferences like noise and looks, the closeness to the prototype or reality makes it even more exciting.

I'm sorry and I don't mean to be confrontational but I am a long-standing locomotive engineer in real life. I have to completely disagree with your opinion on ballast size for HO scale. Fine shouldn't even be considered, it is way, way too tiny. Medium is slightly small and coarse is definitely too large on average. The best option is medium perhaps with a slight amount of coarse integrated into the mix. I see this video was posted nearly 10 years ago and maybe hobby ballast has changed during that period but I can guarantee you that there are indeed chunks ranging from 4" to 6" on the railways of today which in scale, for HO coarse runs from 4.4" to 7.2".

It makes sense for your situation. Here in Australia the cork would make it more realistic looking, but every country would be different in the approach. Is sound deadening really that important? Just curious on that as most trains make a lot of noise going over points in real life, at least that is my experience here. Thanks for the video and explanation.

I realize this is an old video, as I type this in November 2019. Over the years I have started, and sadly had to abandon layout projects due to household moves. My latest endeavor was going along well, (until I moved to California) but my point here is? I really wish, back in 2010, I had thought of using glue instead of track nails. Would have made my life easier, with less cussing. Hah! Back then I used pre-cut Homasote for roadbed (1/2 inch ply for sub-roadbed). Today, next time....if Homasote is available, going that way...but cork works fine, and less expensive. No basements in California, though, and that's a bummer....
